Jason’s eccentric single speed
I can count on my hand the number of single speeds I’ve built under my own name. Those few bikes are some of my favorites and this one is no different. I don’t know if it’s the color, the big tires, the rack, or the simplicity of a single speed but this bike makes me want to build something similar for myself.
To build a bike around a hub might seem crazy but single speeds and fenders can be a finicky combination. The White Industries eccentric hub can solve that problem but can add other issues when cantilever brakes and gear ratios are thrown in the mix. Everything miraculously worked out though.
Jason had a good idea of what he wanted from the bike and even provided me with a Richard Sachs’s French style lug set. I do love to use these lugs but sometimes I like to add some details like the rings on the top and bottom of the head tube. The Pacenti MTB fork crown was modified to complement the lugs.
For the rest of the components, it was all silver, shine, and polish. The custom stem and rack are the shiniest of the parts in the their bright chrome finish but other details like the polished KMC stainless chain, IRD headset, and modified vintage Suntour levers fit right in.
The bright powder blue Jason chose brings it all to life. I added the gold lining on the tubes and fenders using the steadiest of hands I could muster. The final product is a well-balanced, upright, and most importantly fun bike for quick outings.

Hi – have you ever a single speed with Tange or another well known Japanese steel? Thanks.
